Very Common Social Anxiety Symptoms

Social anxiety symptoms have been recorded all over the world. But their content of focus varies across different cultures.

Social anxiety symptoms refer to increased arousal accompanied by generalized feeling of fear or apprehension. It is a situation which creates abhorrence or agitation in the individual by merely thinking of an upcoming event or condition which he wants to avoid.

In individualistic societies, such as that of the United States, feelings of anxiety tend to focus on fear of being evaluated negatively by others. In collective societies, like that of Japan, social anxiety revolves around an individual’s fears of not being able to satisfy his social mates, or act in a way which will be disapproved by society, or members of the respective social group.

Society Related anxiety

The anxiousness is dependent on the individual and his perception of society. We can, here, cite an example of social anxiety symptom. A lady may be afraid to stand in a queue in a bus stand, feeling uneasy of people watching her from behind.

Let us take another instance.

A young man who is going out into the world to establish himself is afraid of being rejected by the people whom he will meet.
What are his reactions?

  • He does not go out and meet them.
  • He shuts himself completely from society, which is, applying the moving away from others theory of basic hostility as explained by neo Freudian theorist, Karen Horne.

Social Anxiety and Social Phobia

Social phobia is when a person feels nervous or scared to face other people in a social gathering or get together. He is unnecessarily worried about others’ opinions and judgments about him. Hence he shrinks from all activities that involve outsiders. Excessive self consciousness leading to feelings of basic anxiety causes these individuals to channel their reasons negatively. For example, a person may think “O! What if they don’t like my work and criticize me? I better not say anything.”

Fear overtakes all their intellect and suppresses their capabilities and talents.
Social anxiety symptoms include shyness, stage frights, performance anxiety, timid ness and others which may assume clinical forms if the individual is subject to prolonged exposure.
