How to overcome social anxiety – step 1

When you are about to go out in some public place or in a social situation, request a trusted individual to accompany you and help you feel comfortable. Your spouse or therapist or brother or sister or friend can accompany you – in short anyone who will make you feel safe and secure.

How to overcome social anxiety – step 2

Whenever you feel a panic attack coming on or you start feeling anxious, take 3 deep long breaths. Inhale slowly, sustain the breath and then exhale slowly. Do it thrice, you will feel really relaxed. If possible, excuse yourself from the social situation and visit the washroom. Splash cool water on your face, rinse your hands under tap water, stand in front of the AC or fan or drink a glass of cool drink.

Or simply walk out into the open air, take in the fresh air, think of something pleasant and happy and when you have calmed down sufficiently, walk in once more. You will know when you are getting anxiety attacks in a social situation through the symptoms – sweaty palms, shaking and shivering, racing pulse, heavy breathing etc.

What you have to understand is that you don’t suffer from any palpable danger as such. It is all in your mind. Just survey the situation and acclimatize yourself with that situation. You have to realise that you are not dying and the symptoms you are experiencing are just signs of panic attack. Your body is reacting to the fear that lies within you and you have to conquer that fear by facing your fear! The moment you face your fear, it will just dissolve and vanish into thin air.
Tell yourself that whatever happens, you will be able to cope with it; it won’t mean the end of the world, life will continue to go on just as before and that you are very resilient.

You should also take trained medical help to overcome your social anxiety, work with your therapist, join an anxiety prevention program and you also need to work on your self esteem. This is how to overcome and cure social anxiety.
