Types of Anxiety Disorders Taking Action - Stopping Anxiety

Anxiety Signs and Symptoms

The feeling of anxiety is experienced, normally, by every individual at some point in their lives. It may be the rising of your heartbeat before going up on stage to perform, speaking infront of a crowd, taking ones final examinations, butterflies in the stomach when meeting someone special, etc. These anxiety signs and symptoms are quite common and are generally experienced by everyone at some point in their lives.

There are however some more disabling symptoms that when they start to affect the quality of ones life, indicate a much bigger problem than mild anxiety. These anxiety symptoms can manifest both physically or emotionally/mentally. Here is a short list of some common symptoms experienced by anxiety sufferers.

Physical Anxiety Symptoms

• Dizziness/Foggy Headed
• Rapid heartbeat that feels like your chest is about to burst.
• Voice tends to become broken or shaky.
• Muscle twitches and cramps.
• Shivering and sweaty hands.
• The nerves refuse to function correctly. The result is that people are seen blinking frequently, biting nails, blushing, sweating or even clutching both hands together without uttering a word.

Emotional/Mental Anxiety Symptoms

• Fear of showing one’s nervousness.
• Avoiding social gatherings and events at the expense of destroying or interrupting one’s own life and activities.

Anxiety related symptoms can often look quite different from one person to another. This is because anxiety is actually a group of related conditions that span across several different forms of anxiety and several sub-forms.

Nevertheless, anxiety disorders in general all have one common symptom: They all experience some form of severe or constant worry or fear of situations, places or things that other people may not be threatened by.

In order to effectively deal with your anxiety problem and get rid of it, it's vital that you have a good understanding of anxiety and it's origins itself. This will help to shed light on the meaning of it in your life, and what you can do NOW, to begin relieving the disabling symptoms.

The Six Types of Anxiety Disorders

There are 6 major types of Anxiety disorders; You may experience these disorders one, two, or more at any one time. It's important to know that the 6 different types all carry their own set of symptoms with some inter-changing between related conditions. We've already discussed Anxiety Attacks (Panic Attacks) in this article, so the following will only cover the 5 remaining conditions: Generalised Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Phobias, and Obsessive Compulsive.

Anxiety Attacks (Panic Attacks)

Anxiety attacks, also known as "Panic Attacks" are sudden and very intense episodes of fear, panic or anxiety, accompanied by a feeling of impending doom or terror and a feeling of certainty that you are about to die.

For some people anxiety attacks are experienced infrequently and occur in such instances where a performance or speech infront of a large audience must be given, or getting trapped in an elevator for example. For other people however, these anxiety attacks can come quite often, and occur spontaneously without any sign or trigger of the onset of one.

The experience of an Anxiety attack can be so terrifying that the physical sensations created by them, can feel as if you are loosing complete control over yourself and your reality. Many who suffer from Anxiety attacks feel as if they are having a heart attack or that they are literally dying.

Anxiety Attacks generally hit their peak within 10 minutes of it first starting. Once the anxiety attack is over, you may fear the onset of another one especially having one in public.

Generalised Anxiety Disorder or GAD can be characterized as being a lingering form of anxiety that is carried around with a person throughout their day.

This type of anxiety usually causes intese and frequent worrying and tension. Generally it is most upsetting during the morning, but it can also cause sleep problems at night. Doctors will tell you that sleep related problems can stem from worry or physical pain. Many people report frequent sleep problems with this form of anxiety.

General Anxiety is also a type of anxiety that can develop after you have had a Panic Attack (Anxiety Attack). With the fear, terror and confusion caused by Panic, your mind becomes very susceptible to GAD since it becomes exhausted from the experience.

Symptoms of Generalised Anxiety

Nausea

Intrusive thoughts

Dizziness

Feelings of unreality and depression

Exhaustion

Sleep disturbance

Vision Problems

Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank

Cramps

Restlessness

Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder)

"In any social situation, I felt fear. I would be anxious before I even left the house, and it would escalate as I got closer to a college class, a party, or whatever. I would feel sick at my stomach-it almost felt like I had the flu. My heart would pound, my palms would get sweaty, and I would get this feeling of being removed from myself and from everybody else. "When I would walk into a room full of people, I'd turn red and it would feel like everybody's eyes were on me. I was embarrassed to stand off in a corner by myself, but I couldn't think of anything to say to anybody. It was humiliating. I felt so clumsy, I couldn't wait to get out. "I couldn't go on dates, and for a while I couldn't even go to class. My sophomore year of college I had to come home for a semester. I felt like such a failure."-Charles Linden

Affecting around 5.3 million American adults, Social Anxiety generally manifests in childhood or early adolesence and can escalate into adult hood. Social Anxiety disorder, can be one of the most debilitating forms of Anxiety there is.

This kind of anxiety can drive people to avoid beneficial social situations and become hermits because of the enormous amount of pressure and anxiety that escalates in any given social situation.

Social Anxiety involves intese feelings of anxiety, fear, and an overwhelming sense of self-consciousness: "All eyes are on me!" People with Social Anxiety are generally plagued by intense fears of others watching or judging them and often worry about embarassment and self-humiliation.

The dread brought on by Social Anxiety can cause people to worry and stress on a social event days and even weeks in advance. People who experience this disorder are generally aware of their mal-adjustment to social activities but generally have extreme difficulty in overcoming it even if their fears are acknowledged. Specific phobias such as this are easily treatable with targeted Psychotherapy.

The Symptoms of Social Anxiety

Blushing

Sweating

Uneasiness

Trembling/Shaking

Nausea

Difficulty Speaking or Communicating

Phobia Related Anxiety

©Unknown

Phobia related anxiety is a form of anxiety based on irrational, inappropriate, and involuntary fears of normal situations or things. Phobia related anxiety can cause Panic in any individual that is confronted with his/her fear or phobia.

There is a seperate category of symptoms called Phobic disorder, but this relates to a broader condition of anxiety disorders.

As far as phobia related anxiety is concerned, there is generally three different types of Phobia each with it's own unique condition symptoms and experiences. The three types of phobias are Specific, Social, and Agoraphobia. Here, I'll only outline the two phobias not already discussed; Specific and Agoraphobia.

Specific Phobia

"I'm scared to death of flying, and I never do it anymore. I used to start dreading a plane trip a month before I was due to leave. It was an awful feeling when that airplane door closed and I felt trapped. My heart would pound and I would sweat bullets. When the airplane would start to ascend, it just reinforced the feeling that I couldn't get out. When I think about flying, I picture myself losing control, freaking out, climbing the walls, but of course I never did that. I'm not afraid of crashing or hitting turbulence. It's just that feeling of being trapped. Whenever I've thought about changing jobs, I've had to think, 'Would I be under pressure to fly?' These days I only go places where I can drive or take a train. My friends always point out that I couldn't get off a train travelling at high speeds either, so why don't trains bother me? I just tell them it isn't a rational fear." - Charles Linden

Specific Phobia related anxiety is a form of intense fear that revolves around something that poses little to no real danger to the individual experiencing the fear.

Experienced by over 6.5 million American adults, and found more commonly amongst women than men, this type of fear and phobia generally revolves around things like closed-in places, heights, escalators, tunnels, highway driving, water, flying, dogs, and injuries involving blood.

These phobias are not only an intense fear experienced by the person, but they are generally irrational fears. As put by Charles Linden of The Linden Method: "you may be able to ski the world's tallest mountains with ease but be unable to go above the 5th floor of an office building".

Many who suffer from a Specific Phobia are quite aware that their fears may be irrational but when confronted with the object of their phobia or even thinking about that thing, they are unable to do so and the mere thought can trigger extreme anxiety or a panic attack.

While there isn't a clear explanation for the cause of Specific Phobias there is some evidence that indicates phobias may originate within families. Phobias may also be the cause of past traumatic experiences. Phobias are generally developed early in childhood but can develop in adolesence, and escalate in adulthood.

If the phobia experienced by the individual is easy to avoid than that person may decide that they are not in need of treatment at all. It isn't unlikely for individuals to make decisions based on these phobias that affect greatly, important career or personal decisions. If this type of avoidance is carried consistently the phobia can become disabling. With carefully targeted and specific Psychotherapy, Specific Phobias are easily treatable.

Agoraphobia

©anxietydisordersontario.ca

Agoraphobia is a semi-related condition to Specific Phobia. Agoraphobia however has a much broader meaning in terms of specificity.

Agoraphobia includes fears that overlap upon each other and revolve around the fear of leaving the comfort and safety of the home.

This is a very debilitating condition because literally anywhere you go and especially places that don't have an immediate exit, can create an extreme sense of anxiety, stress, worry and panic. Agoraphobics can also become completely housebound preferring the comforts of their home vs. the terrifying and unpredictable external world.

While the anxiety levels and avoidance behavior varies from person to person, as mentioned, Agoraphobia is perhaps the most incapacitating Phobic disorder there is affecting Career, Social, and Personal development.

The Symptoms of Agoraphobia

Fear of having or being required to leave the home

Fear of being surrounded by a group of people or being in enclosed areas

Fear of the overwhelming sensations of wide open spaces

Fear of being far away from the comfort zone of the home environment.

If signs of Agoraphobia are noticed early in it's development it can be completely cured. If ignored and left alone it can become a frightening, debilitating and destructive problem in your life. Signs of agoraphobia usually begin with avoidant behavior. Our human nature instinctively tells us to avoid the things, situations, places, or people that could cause us harm.

What must be understood is that these beliefs of insecurity are often irrational and by continuing with avoidant behavior you are strenghtening the phobia and condition. In order to treat this condition it's vital that you take action as soon as possible to avoid further problems in the future.

Agoraphobia as a Habit

Instead of seeing your agoraphobia as an illness try looking at it from the perspective of it being simply a "habit"; A learned habit that developed over time by you - That's All!

Now look at the situation as only being just a "bad habit". Now just do what you need to to shake off that habit so you can take back control of your life!

Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD)

©TheCollaboratoryatColby

PTSD is a condition that develops as a result of experiencing or witnessing first-hand a traumatic life threating situation or experience such as a car crash or a war.

Gulf War syndrome, the illness that has greatly affected the lives of many soldiers is said to be a form of PTSD. It is estimated today, that 1 in every 8 returning soldiers suffer from PTSD.

PTSD is not entirely relevant to anxiety disorders specifically because it is more of a form of trauma than anxiety, but if you feel that it is causing you unbearable mental and emotional pain and is related to your anxiety than it is highly advisable that you consult your GP or Psychologist.

The Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD)

-Flashbacks or nightmares of the traumatizing event

-Hypervigilance

-Person may startle easily

-Withdrawal from peers and/or family

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

©brainsyoursmineours.blogspot.com

OCD is a form of anxiety characterized by a conscious or sub-conscious need to perform a specific action several times over again. This has often been referred to as a "ritual". Some common rituals types involve such compulsions as to repeadetly wash ones hands continuously until the need is fulfilled. Counting, Checking something repeatedly and cleaning are other types of activities commonly associated with OCD.

OCD can become quite debilitating especially when mixed with Panic or Agoraphobia. Treatment for OCD is generally therapy based. The patient needs to be able to first come to the realization and complete understanding that their actions are irrational. Then, the patient can move toward recovery by implementing the techniques given to them by their therapist. This allows the patient to make a smooth transition from condition to recovery, and allows the patient to re-learn the obsessive actions into a more appropriate behavior. The "secret to OCD" is learning to divert the mind away from the compulsory rituals to more appropriate and normal activities.

It needs to be mentioned that the types, sub-types, and symptoms that I have just listed can all be interlinked with each other, and the person experiencing them may experience several different symptoms from any of the 6 Anxiety Disorder Types. There is no specific pattern and or consistent form of Anxiety; everyone of us experiences Anxiety differently.

Understanding Your Anxiety

The Human body carries with it, a natural stress response to danger known as the "fight or flight response".  This response in our bodies helps us to anticipate events and situations that make us feel threatened or in danger. When our anxiety is functioning properly it can help us to remain alert, vigilant, focused and aware of our surroundings and environment in times of danger. Jumping out of the way in time to avoid an oncoming vehicle; the way we feel in that instant of shock, is an example of our stress response or our anxiety initiating a response from us to "move out of the way"..

It's only when this stress response becomes too much, too soon, too often, and too strong that it becomes a problem, and this is generally the case for many people. Although many of us try not to remind ourselves that we're stressed at all.

Since this is often the case, what is happening is your body's stress response is trying to communicate with you that there is something it needs you to pay attention to.

Symptoms that will often help indicate that this is what is occurring manifest on both physical and emotional/mental levels. These types of anxiety signs and symptoms are indicating that your body, mind, and emotions are exhausted and need to be replenished. In other words, you need stress relief.

Do You Have an Anxiety Disorder?

If any of the following anxiety signs and symptoms are familiar to you and are causing you trouble in your life, you may have an anxiety disorder:

  • Do you worry overwhelmingly about normal everyday situations that might not have caused you trouble before?
  • Do you constantly anticipate negative things happening?
  • Do you experience a loss of breath and light-headedness?
  • Do you become increasingly nervous and experience sweating and/or hot flushes?
  • Are you having irrational thoughts and fears that are causing problems for your life and your daily routine?
  • Do you feel extremely and unstably self-conscious in social situations?
  • Are you having problems sleeping?
  • Do you have excessive fear of embarrassment or humiliation from your actions by your peers?
  • Have you become afraid of leaving the house out of fear of your anxiety starting up and you loosing control?

Why Anxiety Continues and How it Manifests

©PanicAway.com

The fear generated by an Anxiety Attack is generally what causes Anxiety attacks to re-occur later in the future. Once we give into the fear that we experience, we place ourselves in an never-ending loop of fear, Panic, and Anxiety as illustrated by the image on the left.

By learning how to break the cycle of fear of having another Anxiety attack, you can learn how to completely change your behavior towards them and never have to experience them again.

This simple idea of "changing how you react" to Anxiety, can be the difference between being doomed to live with Anxiety forever and reclaiming your life and living the life YOU decide.

If you are infact suffering from an Anxiety related disorder, I want you to know that curing anxiety is possible.

Many Doctors, Psychologists, Psychiatrists and Medical professionals will all likely tell you that anxiety is not curable, and that it can only be "managed " with prescription medication

I feel that this kind of information is flat-out fraudulent and irresponsible on the part of medical authorities. If this were true, how is it that I was able to cure myself without prescription medication, or expensive therapies? How is it that thousands of people all over the world are curing themselves with such programs as "Panic Away" or "The Linden Method"?

"Anxiety Management" is simply NOT AN OPTION. You should not have to spend your life "managing" something that can be cured. Whether it's in the Doctors, or Pharmaceutical comapanies best interest to recommend medication where it is not needed, I don't know. But what I do know is that people like you are curing themselves NATURALLY every single day, and you can learn how this is done as well.
