Anxiety disorders are typically describes as a painful or apprehensive uneasiness of mind usually over an impending or anticipated ill.
Most of us worry from time to time about important issues such as job performance or loss, inability to meet the expenses, worrying before an important interview or being late for a project deadline, this is a normal phenomenon , but in people with anxiety disorders even the simplest of issues can cause repeated worry and interfere with normal daily activity and take a toll on their physical and mental well-being. In Anxiety disorder there is long-term worry but manifests more as a free-floating, nonspecific and vague type of anxiousness.
There are several forms of Anxiety Disorders but all share the common characteristic of overwhelming fear:
In anxiety disorders the body’s physiological system gets triggered easily and goes into a fight or flight mode. A person suffering from anxiety disorder experiences physical symptoms of nervousness similar to when an average person finds himself/herself in a particularly anxiety-producing situation, such as a conflict, thief in the house, car accident, except that the person with anxiety disorder suffers from such apprehension for no real reason. It is excessive, unrealistic worry or tension, even when there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety. It is a “general” feeling of worry about everything, anything, and nothing.
The anxiety disorder symptoms include: nausea , vomiting, sweaty palms, inability to concentrate, shakiness, tension, irritability, dizziness and, rarely, actual fainting.
These things are caused by excess adrenaline produced in the body, which causes the “flight or fight” response. Anxiety can have a cumulative effect much like stress, it can gather momentum with time and occurs more and more frequently unless some corrective measures are taken to handle the anxiety issues.
There are different types of anxiety disorders:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): It is characterized by an excessive, unrealistic worry or tension, even when there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety. This is a difficult type of disorder to treat since it is often accompanied by mixed and depressive symptoms.
Specific Phobias: Phobias are characterized by intense fears of a specific object or event. Ex: Fear of heights, fear of elevators, and fear of spiders Exposure therapy is the recommended treatment for phobias, it involves the gradual exposure to the stressor in a controlled environment as a way of permanently overcoming the illness.
