The relationship between Stress and Anxiety:

Stress can be a large factor in anxiety and as mentioned earlier it causes a release of hormones, which can result in imbalances in the body. Serious stress can lead to a weakened immune system, which can result in the person falling ill more often, the long-term effects of such repeated episodes of illness can be devastating and can lead to disorders such as anxiety. It has been proven that repeated stress with no positive outcome(aka failure) can lead to decreased production of Brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) in the brain, this decrease can lead to depression.

The person often becomes irritable, emotional, bitter, burns energy reserves easily, withdraws from friends and family and has low self-esteem, and feels hopeless.

The situation can get further complicated when the person tends to lose sight of his/her goals and ends up even more frustrated because (s)he is not being the person they were truly meant to be.

Under stressful situations the dormant genes become vulnerable in a few individuals and have a high chance of getting activated, in fact many episodes of serious illness often begin during a period of low immunity and often follow a viral attack.
